Middelfart Harbor Front
Fremtidens Havn (In English, Harbour of the Future) is the vision for a new 60.000 m2 neighborhood in the center of the town of Middelfart. The project is located on a former industrial site between the life of the city center and the biodiversity of the sea (Lillebælt). The unique location of the site enables us to create a new neighborhood that reconnects the city life to nature and the sea while becoming a valuable anchor point for the town and the municipality.
The ambition of the project is to create a district that will act as a laboratory for future urban development, that through experiments and innovation exemplifies how sustainable housing development can be combined with afforestation, increased biodiversity, circular resource thinking, affordability, and social diversity.
The new neighborhood is as much about nature and biodiversity as it is about urbanity, livability, and culture. The buildings are therefore merged with nature creating a biodiverse landscape with a generous green central axis connecting the pedestrian infrastructure to the waterfront. The character and plants of the landscape change gradually from a dominantly paved urban landscape to a more intimate town park typology and lastly to an open coastal park. The landscape typologies set the frame for the three identities of the neighborhood informing both the architecture and activities taking place in each sub-area.
To realize this vision and meet Middelfart municipality’s high ambitions on sustainability, circularity, biodiversity, and livability, the master plan will be supported by a process tool and process plan design for this exact project. These tools will help us specify the strategies developed through the master plan by including local actors and create innovation through synergy.
